Fishing on the Waitaki River

The Waitaki River is within walking distance and has some wonderful fishing along the banks. Brown and rainbow trout are plentiful. The season runs from October to March. Salmon can also be caught when they are running, any time from Mid February.
A short drive back towards Kurow takes you to the Hakataramea River, a very popular Fly Fishing River. We are happy to point out good spots but if you wish, there is a Local Fishing Guide in Kurow who would take you out.

The Waitaki Valley Lakes

A fifteen minute drive further up the valley will take you to the first of the Waitaki Lakes. Lake Waitaki, Aviemore and Benmore are all wonderful places to fill in an afternoon, with breathtaking views of the glassy blue lakes and surrounding hill country. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for a picnic lunch, or capture stunning landscape photos of authentic New Zealand.
